Firefox Address Bar Trick to Save Time to Search
Written by Pavan Kumar on January 5, 2009
This is probably an uncommon trick which most of the firefox users are not aware of. There are no settings or no about:config changes to make this work. Its simply an in built feature which most of the users don’t know.
Have you ever tried to google search something without using the inbuilt search / google toolbar / typing the url into address bar? I guess the answer to be NO. It is possible and I will let you know how.
Here are some examples which does not need great explanations to make you understand.
To search Google Logos in google, type google logos google in your address bar and hit enter. For google in particular, simply typing the query works.
To search Slumdog Millionaire in IMDB, type slumdog millionaire imdb and hit enter.
You can try with anything in similar manner like the following:
- Technology wiki – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology
- mail yahoo – http://mail.yahoo.com
- slumdog millionaire yahoo – yahoo movies page for that move
BTW, this trick does not seem to work for every site you may try this only for popular sites and can save some time, bandwidth and mouseclicks 😉 . I think this would be a killer tip for those who use slow internet connections. It seems this works using I’m Feeling Lucky feature of Google and is not related anyway with search engines added on firefox.
This trick has been shared by my college friend Shivu.
PS: This seems not to be working when used with OpenDNS. You may try for other free DNS Services.
